Another former UFC fighter, Lavar Johnson has signed with Bellator MMA and will be one of the three former UFC heavyweights in the season 9 four-man Bellator tournament. Mark Godbeer vs. Cheick Kongo were supposed to headline this week’s Bellator 101, but with Joe Warren and Nick Kirk on the card, Godbeer vs. Kongo were moved to Bellator 102. Bellator 102 takes place October 4th at Visalia Convention Center in California.
Lavar Johnson had a great start to his UFC career when the Strikeforce cross-over knocked out Joey Beltran and then followed that with a KO win over Pat Barry. Johnson took his next fight on late notice, when he took on the very tall Stefan Struve. In his final UFC fight, Johnson was dominated all three rounds as Brendan Shaub took Johnson to the ground and kept him there.
Johnson will take on Vinicius Queiroz in the opening round of the tournament at Bellator 102. Quieroz is coming off a semi-final tournament lost where he was defeated by the current Bellator heavyweight champion, Alexander Volkov. Quieroz is (1-1) under the Bellator banner after he defeated Mark Holata at Bellator 75. Quieroz fought once inside the octagon, losing to Roy Broughton via rear-naked-choke at UFC 120: Bisping vs. Akiyama.
